IRVINE, Calif. and SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Offering an efficient solution for deploying Wi-Fi networks and carrying their traffic, market leaders Aktino and Tropos® Networks today announced they are working together to provide a complete solution for network providers.
Aktino is the leader in delivery of business-class broadband over existing copper wiring infrastructure, and Tropos Networks, with more than 500 customer networks deployed worldwide, is the market leader in delivering metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network systems. By working together, the two companies can offer service providers an unrivaled solution - the routers and management software for citywide Wi-Fi deployments, more than enough backhaul bandwidth to comfortably transport the aggregated Wi-Fi traffic, as well as a practical way to power that equipment over the same copper telephone lines used to handle the backhaul of the network traffic.
Aktino and Tropos Networks tested their equipment extensively for interoperability before implementing their agreement and the results were impressive. In the tests, the Tropos 5320DC router, with its MetroMesh™ architecture, and the Aktino AK5000 point-to-multipoint Ethernet platform were linked. The test used eight copper pairs at a range of 12,000 feet, with DC power drawn from the Aktino modems.
The Tropos Networks MetroMesh architecture enables carriers, municipalities, and public safety agencies to deliver city-wide fixed and mobile multi-megabit connectivity for IP-based voice, video, and data applications. In a typical installation, the Aktino equipment would carry the traffic from each Tropos Network router over existing copper pairs, backhauling that traffic to the nearest carrier central office.
“With this pairing of technologies, available in a single solution package, network providers can roll out a Wi-Fi network very rapidly,” said Rob Pilgrim, Director of Business Development of Tropos Networks. “Aktino’s multi-pair bonding technology is an outstanding backhaul option for carriers transporting MetroMesh data traffic over their existing copper infrastructure, and we are excited to have them in our Tropos MetroMesh Solution Partner program.”
