SAN JOSE, Calif. -- ONI Systems, a leading provider of optical telecommunications equipment for metropolitan and regional markets, has introduced its newest product addition to the ONLINE( optical transport platform, the ONWAVE( STM-16 (OC-48) SDH/ SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM). The new ONWAVE STM-16 ADM delivers STS-1 switching and grooming functionality within a circuit pack to eliminate the need for separate stand-alone boxes for sub-wavelength grooming. As a result, a service provider's operational costs can decrease because they can reduce space and power requirements, as well as manage wavelength and sub-wavelength services on a single, unified management system. The ONWAVE STM-16 ADM is expected to be generally available in Q2 2001.

"In the past, as carriers added wavelength capable equipment such as our ONLINE series to their network, they may have required a separate add/drop multiplexer product in addition to our dynamic transport system. With the addition of the ONWAVE STM-16 ADM product, instead of another network element that consumes space, power and is relatively expensive, they simply add circuit packs to their ONLINE system, as required," said Marianne Wu, senior director of Product Marketing, ONI Systems. "With our new ONWAVE STM-16 ADM, carriers will be able to realise the significant benefits of an integrated, scalable and flexible platform that can provide wavelength services, data services and TDM services. The STS-1 switching and grooming capability provides an efficient traffic management solution for inter network transport."
