To discontinue development of large-size photonic crossconnect subsystems based on analog MEMS technology; to cut 100 employees

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- OMM, Inc., a leading supplier of photonic switching subsystems based on MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) technology announced today that it will increase its focus on mid-sized photonic cross-connect subsystems. To do so, the company will discontinue development of rack-based large port-count photonic cross-connect subsystems based on analog MEMS technology, commonly referred to as 3D, and instead concentrate on digital MEMS technology, commonly referred to as 2D. As part of this plan, OMM will focus all of its resources on MEMS photonic cross-connect modules and board-level photonic switching subsystems, which have generated increasing quarterly revenues for the company for the past five quarters. The decision to stop developing 3D rack-mounted subsystems was based on the lack of visible near-term demand for such large port-count products. Feedback from equipment manufacturers and network operators indicates that the market for large port-count photonic cross-connect subsystems will not materialize for two years or more. As part of its restructuring, OMM will downsize its total staff by approximately 100 employees."Much of the market demand will be for small to mid-sized cross-connect switching fabrics, and 2D technology is most suited for this type of application," said Marlene Bourne, Senior Analyst at Cahners In-Stat Group. "The market opportunity for very large cross-connect fabrics, which are achievable with 3D technology, is not expected to mature for another two to three years." OMM Inc.
