Oki Electric Industry claims the world’s smallest footprint, 10-Gbit/s optical modulator driver IC

TOKYO -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today announced that it has developed the world’s smallest footprint, 10Gbps optical modulator driver IC for optical communication, with a power consumption of 0.65W. Sales for this new driver IC starts from August 2004 targeting a 50 percent worldwide market share in the fiscal year ending March 2006.

“10Gbps optical communication modules are becoming pluggable, which makes it easy to attach and remove them from the connector. Because of this trend, smaller and lower power consumption optical and electronic components are required by our customers,” said Masayuki Tsuboi, President of Optical Components Company at Oki Electric. “Responding to such needs and maximizing Oki’s advanced technologies, we succeeded in developing the world’s smallest 10Gbps optical modulator.”

Compared to conventional modules that operate on a power supply of –5.2V, Oki’s newly developed KGL4195KD is a 10Gbps optical modulator driver IC that operates on +3.3V, giving customers a lower voltage drive and lower power consumption module. While maintaining Oki’s high-quality wave-type driver IC, Oki reduced power consumption by 35 percent compared to conventional ICs by optimizing circuit design in the low voltage power supply. Oki succeeded in developing a modulator with 0.65W, the lowest power consumption in the world. By using a 4 by 4, small ceramic package, the footprint is also the world’s smallest.

By using this product, users can produce smaller and lower power consumption 10Gbps pluggable modules such as for XFP, X2 and XENPAK*1. Utilizing Oki’s advanced electronic device technologies in high-speed and high voltage processing and targeting the 10Gbps optical communication market that is expected to grow, Oki aims sales of 20 billion yen for this chip after the fiscal year ending March 2006.
