JÄRFÄLLA, Sweden -- Suitable for use in long and extended reach applications, Northlight Optronics' PGT20310 is a cooled TOSA (transmitter optical subassembly) for use in 2.5Gbps modulated DWDM compatible transceivers. Aimed at manufacturers of SFF (small form factor) and SFP (small form factorpluggable) transceivers, the TOSA 's high optical efficiency, low power consumption and small size provide a leading edge solution to their requirements.

Providing 8dBm of output power and a typical small signal bandwidth of 3GHz, the most important application areas for the direct modulated(DM) PGT20310 are Gigabit Ethernet and Fiberchannel applications. The device is also an excellent choice for DWDM SDH STM-16 and SONET OC-48 applications.

Good chirp characteristics contribute to the device's 150km long reach capability, whilst Northlight's InP semiconductor growth and process technologies for the laser chip offer excellent optical performance to provide high quality data transmission over long fiber distances. Laser wavelengths are designated according to the ITU-T 100GHz grid.

Factors driving the demand for this type of product are the growth of data traffic and storage. Particularly, the growth of data storage sites for corporate applications, local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs). Comprising a cooled DFB laser mounted in a hermetic package that includes an isolator and a monitor photo detector, the device's small package size of 17.86 x 5.8 x 5.3mm gives compatibility with SFF and SFP transceivers, and its integrated cooler ensures wavelength stability for DWDM applications, providing excellent optical performance for a wide range of applications.

Northlight has expended much effort in the PGT20310's package design; the company's in-house, cutting edge design capability coupled with CAD design technology enables it to achieve high performance levels in a very small package. The electrical connection for signal drive, laser current and monitor diode can be achieved via a flex foil connector. Northlight's PGT20310 features an LC receptacle port and a fiber tailed version is also available. This latest product from Northlight expands its present TOSA and ROSA (transmitter and receiver) family that was announced at ECOC 2003 in Rimini. Northlight has experienced major customer interest in the TOSA/ROSA range and has just completed the first round of customer sampling, receiving very positive feedback on its product performance.

With the addition of the new 2.5Gbps DM TOSA, Northlight strengthens the very strong market position of its TOSA family. This new product extends Northlight's offering in this market segment, complementing the existing TOSA/ROSA range that embraces 10Gbps cooled TOSA transmitters for both 40 and 80 km, and a 10Gbps ROSA PIN-TIA receiver.
