KISTA, Sweden -- Offering a more compact solution than externally modulated devices, Northlight Optronics' PGT20410 transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) module is a cooled DFB laser with integrated electro absorption modulator. The device offers groundbreaking 10Gbps performance for such a small package at a very competitive price.

Intended for XFP, X2, XENPAK and XPAK transceivers in OC-192/STM-64 DWDM applications, the device gives a competitive edge to OEMs who build small form factor transponders and transceivers. The increasing demand for low cost, high performance, and particularly in this case, compact, optical components has led to the development of the transmitter. The device's compact design offers distinct performance advantages to transceiver and transponder manufacturers.

Although low cost, the device features a high bandwidth performance, enabling data rates up to 12.5Gbps, allowing its use in systems with FEC (Forward Error Correction) or in 10Gb Ethernet applications.

Offering excellent wavelength stability, the device can be used for operation at 100GHz grid without wavelength locking. The transmitter's excellent chirp characteristics and resultant low dispersion penalty mean that it can be used in long reach applications up to 80km. Suitable for DWDM applications, the PGT20410 is able to operate across the entire C-band (1527-1565nm).

The PGT20410 TOSA transmitter features 0dBm output power and comes in a hermetic package that includes an isolator and a monitor photodetector. Measuring just 18mm x 5.8mm, the device is the first of its kind on the market to achieve this level of functionality in such a small package.

Northlight offers a counterpart with this transmitter, the equally diminutive PGR20400 receiver optical subassembly (ROSA), that maintains the high performance standards set by PGT20410.

The TOSA module from Northlight Optronics offers designers a new platform in compact, high-performance transmitters for use in the next generation of transceivers and transponders. Northlight Optronics has drawn on over 10 years experience in DFB/EA chip design and opto component packaging to develop this market leading 10Gbps product.

Northlight Optronics is exhibiting at ECOC 2003 in Rimini, Italy where this product can be seen at booth # 652.
