No Cupcake for You!

NOON -- T-Mobile International AG is rolling out what it calls a "maintenance release" over-the-air update for its G1 Android phone this week.

The T-Mobile mob is keen to point out that this will not be the fabled Cupcake open-source release, which is supposed to sort out all the bugs in the OS, add new features like a video recorder, and make the phone user smell like freshly cut tulips. [Ed. note: OK, maybe not...]

Nontheless, this is an interesting update to the phone. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) says that a new, cool -- but creepy -- feature will allow users to track their on-the-move friends on the Maps application. The update will also add voice search to the operating system.

re: No Cupcake for You! The new location feature -- Latitude -- seems nicely done. It's great that it's cross platform (i.e. also works on my Nokia) and doesn't have any operator dependencies.

It'd be cool if mobile apps could 'enhance serendipity' by, say, helping you run into mates on a night out on the town.

Wonder if it will ever actually work out like that though?
