BTE Explores Services in an SDN/NFV Era

Most of the focus on SDN and NFV thus far has been on how to implement it, technical challenges, and business model considerations. That's for good reason -- the technologies represent a huge change in network operations.

Next week's Big Telecom Event (BTE) in Chicago will touch on all those topics, of course, but it also will delve into where SDN and NFV really get exciting -- the new services and opportunities they enable.

Heavy Reading analyst Jim Hodges will host a panel, "Service Enablement & Innovation in the SDN/NFV Era," that will look at the impact virtualization will have on future services, including how they are delivered and monetized.

"In addition, we are going to consider the evolution of APIs to make this happen from an orchestration perspective, and conclude by examining the testing tools that are emerging to tie all this together," Hodges says.

One result of virtualization could be more personalized content from network operators that creates new revenue streams at a faster pace. Hodges says he's looking forward to the D-NFV proof-of-concept orchestration demo that CenturyLink Inc. (NYSE: CTL) developed with a number of vendors, including panel member RAD Data Communications Ltd. , to show how this might work. (See BTE: Service Innovation in the Spotlight.)

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) -approved demo will showcase RAD's dedicated customer-edge distributed NFV equipment running Fortinet Inc. 's Next-Generation Firewall and Certes Networks Inc. virtual encryption/decryption engine as virtual network functions (VNFs) with Cyan Inc. 's Blue Planet system orchestrating the entire ecosystem. You have to see it to believe it -- and perhaps to understand it, too. (See NFV Gets Practical at BTE.)

You can learn more about these topics and see them in action at BTE next week. The panel will take place on Tuesday, June 17, at 2:30 p.m. The demos will run the length of the show. Full details are available at the BTE website.

Re: BTE Explores Services in an SDN/NFV Era Sarah, sounds like we are on the verge of transformative change that will create numerous opportunities.  This will be interesting to watch to identify the new business models that evolve from these dynamic changes.

Will this be streamed live or will Light Reading be hosting either a webinar or Radio Show on this?
