Juniper Networks is the latest company to put its virtualization technology up for an independent evaluation with Light Reading and our test partner EANTC and the resulting report is good news for network operators, enterprise users and the industry in general.
Juniper's Cloud CPE solution is designed to enable service providers to transition from providing multiple physical customer premises equipment (CPE) products to enabling multiple virtual network functions (VNFs) to be provisioned from a centralized cloud-based server or distributed hardware platforms. For this particular evaluation, the centralized cloud option was put through a number of tests by the European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC) team, which takes the role of a communications service provider and then runs through multiple processes and tests to see if the technology under evaluation is "fit for purpose."
In this case, the EANTC team found that Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) has developed a product that not only meets a number of key service provider requirements -- it works in a multi-vendor environment, co-exists with legacy physical systems and provides efficiency gains -- but also made it easy for a service provider's enterprise customers to deploy and configure services themselves through an easy-to-use self-service portal.
The EANTC team noted in its report: "We found that the platform is able to conceal the difficult details behind the user-friendly interface, while it allows for service provider low-level access to the management interfaces and automation as well... We validated that business customers can use Cloud CPE without any modifications to the premises infrastructure while gaining a palette of new functions they can easily manage themselves."
This shows that NFV is maturing, that end users as well as service providers are being taken into account and that key service provider NFV requirements are being met and that can only be good for the whole ecosystem.

Juniper is the latest in a growing number of vendors prepared to put their virtualization technology in the hands of an independent test team. Other companies that have had their NFV-related solutions evaluated include ADVA, Cisco and Nokia, while a larger number of companies have participated in multivendor NFV interoperability tests as part of the The New IP Agency program.
