2:50 PM -- Thanks to an anonymous tip in the message board related to Monday's story on the merger of NexTone Communications Inc. and Reef Point Systems Inc. , I checked out the domain for what could be the name of the combined company: NextPoint Networks. (See NexTone, Reef Point Intro Gateway and NexTone-Reef Point Merger (Still) Coming.)

There's not much at www.nextpointnetworks.com right now -- just a tantalizing "Coming Soon..." But do a quick WHOIS search on "nextpoint," and you find this bit of info:

Domain servers in listed order:

ns1.nextone.com
ns2.nextone.com

Apparently someone at NexTone thinks this domain is valuable enough to park on the company's nameservers.

What's even better is if you do a WHOIS search for www.nextone.com, and find this registry information:

Registrant:
NextPoint Networks
101 Orchard Ridge Drive
Suite 300
Gaithersburg, MD 20878
US

Both records were updated more than a week ago. So it looks as if NexTone has an overzealous Web admin with some inside info or the power to see into the future.

re: NextPoint Networks
The NexTone WHOIS records have already been updated, with administrative contact info changed. Oddly enough, the company kept NextPoint Networks as the registrant. Hrm.

For what it's worth, the last update before this one happened on October 20.
