Nextel Finally Gets 2-Way Text
Nextel Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL) has finally implemented intercarrier two-way SMS text messaging (see Nextel Does Intercarrier SMS) using a system from Wireless Services Corp.
As well as being able to send and receive messages from users on other networks, Nextel subscribers will be able to send text messages of up to 500 characters in length, rather than the standard 160 characters.
Nextel's conversion to intercarrier SMS means that, out of the major U.S. carriers, only Sprint PCS (NYSE: PCS) is not offering true, intercarrier two-way SMS. Sprint is stuck with a rather clunky one-way system (see Sprint: No SMS for You!).
