BALTIMORE -- CLEO -- New Focus, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUFO), a leading supplier of innovative fiber optic products for next-generation optical networks under the Smart Optics for Networks(TM) brand, today unveiled the first commercially available 10-Gigabit per second, 850-nanometer vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) for laboratory applications. The New Focus Model 1780 VCSEL is designed for use in laboratory applications or for test and measurement of 10-Gbit/s data communications components. This product eliminates the need for users to build their own testing devices, enabling manufacturers to achieve earlier time-to-market for new products.

New Focus will be demonstrating Model 1780 at the 2001 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) Conference at Booth # 159.

"We've achieved the first off-the-shelf test source to streamline testing preparation for data communications engineers in the emerging 10G Ethernet market," said Andrew Davidson, project manager at New Focus and the developer of Model 1780. "There is a lot of interest in high performance products that simplify testing as companies push into data communications, an area where faster time-to-market demand is very great."
