BELFAST, U.K. -- Latens, Europe’s leading supplier of software-based Conditional Access (CA) for IPTV and Pay-TV, today announced that it has been selected by Varberg Energi AB, the Swedish utility company, to provide its FCAS content and revenue protection for Varberg’s IPTV services. Varberg Energi presently delivers analog TV channels to its subscriber base and are about to launch a Pay-TV service via its IP network. The Latens CA is installed and is ready to protect Varberg’s revenues at the launch of its IPTV service.

“When planning our IPTV technology roadmap we had the principle that wherever possible we should choose technology solutions that maximized the power and flexibility of our IPTV network,” says Lars Wessman, IT Manager, Varberg Energi AB. “When it came to looking at content and revenue security solutions we quickly realized that we needed to avoid the expense and inflexibility of smartcard solutions. The decision to choose Latens security was straightforward once we discovered that its flexible solutions provided us with all the functionality we required. An added bonus was that Latens had already integrated with Northport and Kreatel, our other main technology providers.”

Varberg’s MPEG-2 Single Program Transport Stream (SPTS) TV content is to be encrypted using the Latens Stream Encryption Engine. Varberg has chosen Northport’s IP streaming and middleware solutions, Streamcast™ and Modulation™. The content is to be decrypted in consumers’ homes by Kreatel IP-set top boxes, with all revenues and content protected by Latens FCAS.

“Varberg’s choice of our solution further reinforces the twin trends towards IPTV security being provided by secure software systems and IPTV operators choosing a ‘best of breed’ approach to IPTV systems,” says Andy Mathieson, Director, Latens Systems. “I look forward to working with Varberg to ensure that their IPTV service remains secure and that our solutions enable Varberg to tailor its business model and content offering to successfully compete with its rivals.”
