SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Telewest (NASDAQ: TWSTY), a leading UK broadband provider, has chosen the Gigabit Ethernet solution from Foundry Networks(TM), Inc. (NASDAQ: FDRY), a leader in next-generation, high-performance, end-to-end switching and routing solutions, to upgrade its IP backbone network. Foundry's BigIron(TM) Layer 3 switches as well as its ServerIron(TM) Layer 4-7 Internet traffic and content management switches have been deployed across Telewest's 10 points of presence (POPS) throughout the UK. The upgrade followed a decision to expand capacity in the IP backbone infrastructure to accommodate future applications and services such as digital TV and Telewest's high-speed Internet service, Blueyonder.

"We needed equipment that wouldn't run out of steam after a couple of years and chose Foundry's BigIron Layer 3 switches for scalability and performance," said Simon Brillus, Internet backbone manager, Telewest. "Foundry's industry-leading Layer 4-7 Web switching capabilities were also key to the implementation of our transparent caching strategy. By routing traffic locally, we can speed up access times and improve reliability," he added.
