Software Defined Radio Forum to issue Request for Information on the portability of signal processing software

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- In an effort to foster improved portability of signal processing software, the Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum--an international wireless industry association dedicated to the development, deployment and promotion of SDR technologies--has created a new working group comprised of leading experts in signal processing software, tools, components, and systems to examine and report on this issue. As one of its first activities, the Forum's Hardware Abstraction Layer Working Group, as it is known, will issue an industry-wide Request for Information (RFI) in mid-April. Working Group members--representing organizations such as Intel, Xilinx, BAE Systems, General Dynamics and Mitsubishi--are interested in information about techniques, tools, and standards for the portability of the high-speed signal processing software in SDR devices. "Our initial goal is to identify ways to improve software portability and understand their relative strengths," said John Chapin, Chief Technical Officer of Vanu, Inc., and chair of the Forum's HAL Working Group. "This is a critical issue for the field of Software Defined Radios. Making the signal processing software more portable will allow software investments to be amortized across product families and component generations, reducing overall cost and increasing the rate of SDR technology deployment." Responses to the RFI on improved software portability are sought from technology providers, system and software developers, and academic researchers. Topics of interest include software tools, modeling and verification methods, test environments, libraries, standard APIs, and source representations.
