Proxim and IBM Global Services deliver broadband wireless for Texas-based Canyon Independent School District
November 30, 2004
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Proxim Corporation (NASDAQ:PROX) , a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and broadband wireless networks, today announced that Proxim and IBM Global Services have delivered a broadband wireless solution for the Texas-based Canyon Independent School District (CISD), a 15-campus educational organization dedicated to excellence in K through 12 schooling.
With a new converged voice and data network that was designed and built by IBM and that utilizes Proxim's Tsunami Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems for its high-speed wireless infrastructure, CISD can now provide its 7,500 students and its faculty and staff including over 1,000 teachers, with high-speed access to critical learning applications and to the Internet. The new network has enabled CISD to offer a nearly 100% increase in computer hours for its students with 20 additional hours of computer time per week, per student. Students can now access a rich set of district learning materials including self-paced courses to earn high-school and college credit, and teachers can now access testing tools and applications that allow them to better assess students and direct their instruction to meet individual student requirements. Furthermore, CISD achieved these goals cost-effectively, at about half the cost of a fiber-based solution.
Canyon ISD's communications system is one of the best available, as a result of the work done by IBM and Proxim," said Ken Burt, CIO of CISD. "Not only was the solution less costly than the fiber-based alternatives we evaluated, but it was implemented in about one-third of the time. We are excited about the new efficiencies and learning opportunities our staff and students will experience as a result of the new network."
