RF Micro Devices offers an 802.11g transceiver solution, providing advantages in power consumption, cost, size, and performance

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced the availability of its new wireless local area network (WLAN) transceiver solution for 802.11g applications. The 802.11g transceiver solution enables long battery life, superior range, small size and low bill of material (BOM) cost, all of which are necessary requirements in the WLAN marketplace.

802.11g technology extends the data rate of the 802.11b standard from 11 Mbps to 54 Mbps while maintaining backward compatibility with all 802.11b devices. RF Micro Devices is a leading provider of transceivers for 802.11b, which is currently the highest volume segment of the WLAN market. Given the Company's leadership position in 802.11b and the advantages of its new 802.11g transceiver solution, the Company anticipates strong customer interest in its 802.11g products.

RFMD's 802.11g solution is comprised of the RF2959 single-chip transceiver and the RF5190 power amplifier (PA). The RF5190 PA builds upon RFMD's experience and leadership in the design and manufacture of GaAs HBT power amplifiers. The performance of the RF2959 transceiver enables long battery life, superior range and low bill of materials (BOM) cost. The RF2959 transceiver is available in a 6x6mm 40-pin package and requires minimal external components. The RF2959 transceiver features a standard interface compatible with multiple baseband/MACs (media access controllers), providing flexibility to our customers. RFMD offers complete reference design kits containing software, design documents and assembly files to fully characterize the RF2959 and RF5190. RF Micro Devices is sampling its transceiver solution to customers now.
