SAN DIEGO -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that the Company has shipped one billion chips since its first commercial CDMA solution was provided to wireless handset customers and infrastructure providers in 1994. In the past nine years, QUALCOMM's chipsets have been instrumental in helping to drive CDMA to be the most dynamic technology in the wireless industry, and helped make the company the largest provider of third-generation (3G) technology today.

Partner and chipset solution supplier to the largest base of wireless device manufacturers worldwide, QUALCOMM has enabled the design and development of a great majority of the more than 330 commercial CDMA2000(R) 1X and WCDMA (UMTS) wireless devices available today. These devices include 3G multimedia and gaming terminals; still-image and video phones; high-accuracy position location phones and dedicated tracking devices, smart phones and wireless PDAs; and low-cost voice phones that allow carriers to provide basic voice service, leveraging the superior network capacity provided by CDMA-based standards such as WCDMA (UMTS) and CDMA2000 1X.

QUALCOMM, originally a provider of multi-chip solutions for early IS-95 (cdmaOne) standard second-generation (2G) CDMA voice phones, has since worked to integrate a greater number of functions into its devices and to support various additional wireless standards, including CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO and WCDMA (UMTS).

Today, QUALCOMM provides the industry with highly integrated, cost- effective chipsets, featuring baseband and radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) and supporting system software. Addressing the demand for wireless data features and services, QUALCOMM's solutions also feature the Launchpad(TM) suite of integrated engines to power a great variety of data applications, the BREW(TM) system, as well as design tools and testing support. This feature set enables manufacturers to engage new geographic markets and consumer segments with proven, pre-tested solutions to ensure superior reliability and faster time to market.

QUALCOMM began shipping its first IS-95 chipsets to support the launches of the world's first cdmaOne systems in Hong Kong and South Korea in late 1995 and early 1996. At that time, QUALCOMM offered a voice-only chipset solution to two customers for network support in a single geographical area.

Today, QUALCOMM supports more than 50 device manufacturers and provides 16 different chipset offerings. QUALCOMM's complete line of integrated chipsets power a majority of the more than 330 commercial 3G wireless devices available today that support networks in 30 countries around the world. This has resulted in a proliferation of not only data-enabled wireless phones, but also data-dedicated devices such as wireless PDAs, Smartphones, data cards for PCs and position-location tracking devices.

cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1X carriers currently support in excess of 164 million subscribers around the globe, with more than 56 3G networks deployed worldwide (source: CDMA Development Group). There have been six WCDMA (UMTS) launches in the past six months (source: 3GToday.com). Working with its partners globally to deploy WCDMA (UMTS) services, QUALCOMM looks forward to continued launches of WCDMA (UMTS) networks this year and beyond.
