SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Onetta, Inc. (, a leading developer and manufacturer of Intelligent Optical Engines (IOEs), today announced that it has released the IOE 11121 C-Band In-Line Amplifier with 0.5dB gain flatness. The first of its kind to be commercially available, the IOE 11121 C improves system design margin, thereby reducing the overall cost of optical networks. Managing the effects of gain ripple over a cascaded amplifier chain in a WDM transmission system is a key consideration for today's optical network equipment manufacturers (NEMs). As channels are applied and transmissions take place over optical wavelengths, a natural divergence in per-channel power begins to occur. For any given system, the spread of gain between the "peaks" and "valleys" across the channels represents gain ripple. As optical signals travel from one amplifier to another, the amount of signal power variation induced by gain ripple has an additive affect, resulting in optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR) degradation.By specifying amplifiers with lower gain ripple, NEMs are able to minimize accumulated signal power variations and consequently, improve their overall system budget. These improvements can be used to simplify network design and reduce network costs, for example, by minimizing the need for costly signal regenerators. The associated performance benefits and cost savings are particularly applicable to long-haul and regional network providers who are rebuilding existing networks or deploying new networks. Initially designed into the IOE 11121 C-Band In-Line Amplifier, 0.5dB gain flatness can also be implemented for Onetta's L-Band EDFAs. The IOE 11121 C offers additional benefits to NEMs who are designing optical networking systems. The advanced functionality of these amplifiers includes ultra-fast optical power transient control and mid-stage access supporting a wide range of add/drop or dispersion compensation modules.
