CARACAS, Venezuela -- Telecommunicaciones Movilnet C.A. (Movilnet), the wireless division of Venezuela's largest telecommunications operator CANTV (NYSE: VNT), today announced the commercial launch of an advanced third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X voice and high-speed data network using equipment, software and services from Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU). Movilnet, a member of the Verizon International group of companies, can significantly increase its voice capacity and offer subscribers new data services such as high-speed instant messaging, e-mail and Internet access at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps) with this new network. Lucent built the 3G CDMA2000 nationwide network to complement Movilnet's existing TDMA (time division multiple access) network and facilitate its evolution to advanced 3G services. Movilnet's CDMA2000 and TDMA networks will coexist allowing the company to utilize its existing infrastructure and radio frequency spectrum (850 MHz). "The new 3G CDMA2000 network launched today will enable us to meet growing subscriber demand and introduce compelling new services to our customers," said Gustavo Roosen, president of Telecomunicaciones Movilnet C.A. "We are pleased to continue our work with Lucent and remain committed to providing our customers with advanced mobile communications services." "Lucent and Movilnet worked as a team to deploy this advanced network and its completion is truly a major milestone for all of us," said Luis Figueiredo, Lucent's regional sales director in charge of the CANTV Movilnet account. "We'll continue to work closely with Movilnet to provide solutions that meet their needs today and tomorrow." Lucent Technologies Inc.
