FREMONT, Calif. -- Ikanos Communications, developer of Smart Silicon For Profitable Broadband(TM), today announced that Korea Telecom is delivering 50 Mbps Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line-Discrete Multi-Tone (VDSL-DMT) services over a single copper pair using equipment from Hyundai Networks, an Ikanos customer. Hyundai's carrier-class, end-to-end, VDSL-DMT solution employs Ikanos programmable chipsets, including the SmartLeap(TM) 8100 for Broadband Access Concentrators and the CleverConnect(TM) 150 for Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), as well as the Ikanos Programmable Operating System(TM) (iPOS). Ikanos has shipped more than 500,000 VDSL-DMT ports in a very short period of time. Korea Telecom, which is experiencing an overwhelming consumer demand for high-speed Internet service, began rolling out its 50 Mbps VDSL-DMT offering in June 2003.

Korea is the world leader in deploying ADSL/VDSL broadband services based on DMT line coding, and there is tremendous competition among carriers to offer consumers the highest-bandwidth services at the most affordable price. In a recent report from Boston-based Pyramid Research titled "Behind Korea's Broadband Explosion," analysts noted that in 2002 Korea had more than one-third of the world's broadband access subscribers and purchased as much as one-quarter of all ADSL equipment.

"The market penetration to offer 50 Mbps VDSL-DMT services to consumers in Korea is increasing. Consumers with high speed Internet connections are demanding very-high bandwidth to support on-line gaming and other high-speed services," said Dr. Park, chief of the research and development center for Hyundai Networks.

Korea Telecom is at the forefront of this burgeoning market. With more than 6.7 million subscribers in Korea, the carrier is one of the largest providers of high-speed Internet services and offers its customers the highest bandwidth in the world.

"Korea is a key market for VDSL-DMT and for Ikanos," said Richard Sekar, vice president of marketing at Ikanos Communications. "We worked closely with Hyundai Networks to help the equipment maker meet its aggressive schedule for delivering high-performance VDSL-DMT solutions to Korea Telecom. Our cooperation has enabled the carrier to respond quickly to its customers' escalating demand for high-speed bandwidth."
