NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications and the digital home, today announced that Humax, a leading international manufacturer of digital satellite set-top boxes (STBs), has based their new high-definition television (HDTV) satellite receiver exclusively on the company's complete DVB-S2/MPEG-4 satellite set-top box (STB) solution. DVB-S2 and MPEG-4 are advanced, industry-standard technologies that allow operators to offer additional HDTV channels and content, including interactive services using their existing bandwidth and infrastructure. Humax's PR-HD1000 STB will be offered to consumers by a large German broadcasting firm in time for the 2006 World Cup in June.
"Semiconductor solutions based on advanced modulation and compression technologies are critical to the next phase of HDTV product and service deployments, and Conexant is at the forefront of this technology transition," said Jeff Crosby, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processing business. "Our comprehensive HDTV system solution provides our customers with the flexibility and performance they need to deliver next-generation, cost-optimized HDTV set-top boxes. In addition, the completeness of our solution helps reduce the inherent risks and time-to-market challenges associated with a major shift in technical platforms."
"Operators are racing to deliver HDTV programming in order to expand their subscriber base and maximize revenue opportunities, and we intend to be a leading provider to this rapidly growing market segment," said Dr. Juha Park, general manager of Humax's Set-top Box business unit. "Our PR-HD1000 is the first HDTV receiver we've launched based on advanced modulation, coding and compression technologies, and a very important part of our product offering. It is also the first advanced technology set-top box that we've based solely on silicon from one vendor, which illustrates the confidence we have in Conexant's products and technologies."
