SAWBRIDGEWORTH, U.K. -- The latest HSDPA Operator Commitments survey published today by GSA - the Global mobile Suppliers Association, confirms the rapidly expanding availability of mobile broadband services globally. The survey confirms 165 HSDPA network commitments in 77 countries, including 110 HSDPA networks now commercially launched in 57 countries. This compares with 70 commercial networks in 39 countries 6 months ago, and 18 commercial networks in April 2006.

Most HSDPA networks support 1.8 Mbps data speeds (peak) delivering a typical user experience of 0.8 - 1.5 Mbps, according to individual network and user device capabilities. The GSA survey confirms a clear trend of increasing network data speed, listing 52 operators who have commercially launched or are deploying 3.6 Mbps (peak) data capability in their networks, as the first phase of a planned evolution to 14.4 Mbps (peak) for many operators by end 2007. A number of networks are close to offering 7.2 Mbps (peak) commercial service, leveraging new higher-speed devices now coming into the market. The GSA survey of HSDPA Devices published on April 3, 2007 confirmed that over 250 user devices had been launched, including 40 products supporting or upgradeable for 7.2 Mbps (peak) operation.

In the uplink direction, the first High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) services have launched. HSUPA increases uplink data throughput up to 1.45 Mbps (peak) initially, later evolving to 5.8 Mbps (peak). The survey indicates at least 19 networks have currently launched, are testing, or are rolling out HSUPA. According to GSA, at least 20 HSUPA-capable user devices have been launched.

The trend by operators to use GSM/EDGE as part of mobile broadband services delivery for service continuity and the best experience was identified in earlier GSA research. This latest survey confirms that 55 of 110 commercial HSDPA operators have also commercially launched GSM/EDGE service. Approaching 80% of HSDPA user devices also support GSM/EDGE functionality.
