LOS ANGELES -- Civcom, a pioneer in the developmentand manufacturing of dynamic optical components and solutions, and LETEKCommunications, a leading Korean designer and manufacturer of DWDM opticalmodules and systems, announced today that their companies are entering into ajoint-development partnership. The relationship will focus on the development ofenhanced performance widely tunable transponders for long-range DWDMapplications.

LETEK, whose current product portfolio includes the SPARK™ family of 2.5 Gbps and10 Gbps transmitters, receivers, transceivers and transponders, is combining forceswith Civcom, the maker of Free-Light™ 10 Gbps widely tunable transponders.Civcom’s Free-Light™ FL-TT-10G product, which received the prestigious LightwaveAttendees’ Choice Award at the 2003 NFOEC show last September, was the world’sfirst widely tunable 10 Gbps 300-pin MSA compliant transponder.

The focus of the development will be to combine the strengths of both companies todesign a longer-reach widely tunable transponder than what is currently available onthe market. It is expected that the new product will improve the reach anddispersion tolerance of existing LR-2 tunable transponders by 50-100%. Thisincreased performance in a widely tunable package, ideal for sparing applications, will help drive down overall CapEx and OpEx costs to carriers by reducing the needfor expensive optical regeneration and amplification.

“Civcom has had a lot of interest with the Free-Light tunable transponder,” saidJacob Vertman, Civcom’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and BusinessDevelopment, “but in addition a number of customers have requested to extend thereach of their links to allow for more flexible network topologies.”

LETEK, a Korean-based company, is seeing strong demand in the Asia-Pacific marketfor its products. “The Korean DWDM market is developing very rapidly and it isexpected that Japan and China will continue this growth over the coming years,” saidDahee Ihm, President and CEO of LETEK Communications. “We already have aTier-1 target customer lined up for this new product”, stated Mr. Ihm.

Civcom will be demonstrating the Free-Light FL-TT-10G at the OFC Conference andExposition, February 24-26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, booth number1525.
