China Telecom Hunan and Huawei recently developed China's first PanoAAU single-sector deployment solution, which provides continuous network coverage for high-speed railways. With this solution, the two companies intend to explore low-cost networking and address coverage and capacity issues, thus building a new benchmark for the ultimate high-speed railway experience.

The innovative 3.5 GHz PanoAAU solution features ultra-high gains. It uses extremely large antenna array (ELAA) with 384 antenna elements and low insertion loss technology to achieve an antenna gain of 25.8 dBi. Furthermore, it uses new wide-angle dipole elements and Meta lens materials, as well as the wide-angle beam sweeping algorithm, to expand the horizontal beam angle from 120° to 180°.

The pilot was conducted along the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway. This railway features the most passenger traffic, highest number of carriages, and busiest operations anywhere in China. It is also the world's longest high-speed railway. Its average daily traffic during holidays and summer vacation exceeds 200,000 passengers, meaning huge demand for wireless networks.

This pilot adopts single-site, single-sector networking. Each site requires only one module to be deployed perpendicular to the direction of the railway traffic. This maximizes its 180° coverage advantage to improve coverage both at the cell edge and under the tower. Compared with the 8T 2-sector solution, which deploys two modules per site, this solution provides better coverage and network performance at lower costs.

Test results on the live network have shown that the 3.5 GHz PanoAAU single-sector solution outperforms the 8T 2-sector solution by delivering 5–6 dB better coverage, 30% higher downlink speeds, and 288% higher uplink speeds, while also ensuring continuous coverage in scenarios involving large inter-site distances. In terms of line construction costs, the PanoAAU single-sector solution reduces device costs by 12%, and total costs over five years by 52% when compared with the 8T solution. In high-speed railway scenarios with large inter-site distances, the PanoAAU solution can achieve continuous 3.5 GHz coverage at low costs, effectively improving the experience of passengers.

The PanoAAU solution provides replicable experience for 5G network construction along China's high-speed railways, enabling advanced 5G networks that offer wider coverage, stronger capabilities, and better experience. Huawei will continue working with operators to carry out research on 5G network construction and deployment solutions in diverse scenarios, to support a thriving digital economy.
