CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Astral Point Communications, Inc. announced today the availability of a modular passive optical system for its ON 7000 SONET node that will optimize transmission of dense wave division multiplexed (DWDM) optical wavelengths in metropolitan and regional networks. The OA 500 Modular Optical System is a totally passive, flexible optical solution used by the ON 7000 node for splitting and combining wavelengths from metro networks. OA 500 components incorporate innovative optical management bus and banded optics capabilities for which Astral Point has filed patent applications. These innovations increase the reliability and overcome many cost and complexity issues traditionally associated with delivery of DWDM wavelengths. "Astral Point has engineered a simple, yet elegant solution for DWDM transport in metro networks. Because the OA 500 is a modular, passive optical solution it allows carriers to pay for the level of DWDM needed today but also cost-effectively scale to meet future growth requirements," said Bob Bellman of Brook Trail Research. "As with the ON 7000 SONET node itself, the OA 500 provides carriers with a high level of investment protection through its highly scalable architecture. With 32 protected wavelengths available today, and scaling to 64 in future releases, this DWDM solution should meet the requirements of metro carriers for years to come."Astral Point Communications Inc.
