ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Multiplex, Inc., the South Plainfield, New Jersey-based, vertically integrated manufacturer of high-end opto-electronic components and subsystems, successfully demonstrated a 10 gigabits-per-second (Gb/s) variant of its MTX-TEML tunable transmitter at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) in Anaheim, California. Multiplex premiered the MTX-TEML last September at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Germany. That first offering was based on Multiplex’s MTX52EW 2.5Gb/s high-speed Electro-absorption Modulated Laser (EML), which was the first product of its kind to offer sixteen channels and electronic, quasi-continuous wavelength tuning. During formal demonstrations of the MTX-TEML at ECOC, 10Gb/s performance was estimated to be six months away. Multiplex’s offering of this higher-performance version at OFC is right on schedule.

The laser has three sections: gain, phase and Bragg. Electronic, quasi-continuous tuning (the MTX-TEML is not temperature tuned) is achieved by injecting current into the phase and Bragg sections. Up to sixteen channels of tuning is possible with a switching time of less than 10 ms. In Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems, the MTX-TEML can effectively back-up sixteen EMLs - which can result in massive reductions in the spare part inventories of network service providers. The versatility of the MTX-TEML also makes it ideal for optical routing, wavelength conversion, optical add-/drop-multiplexing, and instrumentation and remote sensing.
