SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. -- Multiplex, Inc. announced that it has introduced the MTX510EW “21-type,” an electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) module in a 21-pin butterfly package. It uses Multiplex’s high-performance EML platform operating at 1550nm, where fiber loss is at a minimum. Careful control of the output signal for minimum “chirp” allows the 510EW to provide superior performance and long reach over spans of standard single mode fiber. The unique packaging for the MTX510EW 21-type features RF input pins on the rear of the module, eliminating the need for complex 90-degree routing in transponder applications. The module contains a high degree of functionality, which includes an internal laser driver IC, a dual- photodiode-type wavelength sensor and back facet power monitor. It has been designed to serve as a solution for both thermally fine-tuned ITU grid fixed-channel matching and electronically tunable fast ITU channel switching. As with all of Multiplex’s offerings of high-speed EMLs, the MTX510EW 21-type features outstanding eye pattern performance that cannot be duplicated with traditional directly-modulated distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. The MTX510EW series of EML modules are optimized to operate at a bit-rate of 10Gb/s for OC-192 and Metro transmissions with excellent reliability. The 21-type is optionally available for 12.5Gb/s applications.Multiplex continues to expand its broad portfolio of high-speed EMLs for current and next-generation optical networks. Product offerings now include three generations of EML laser packaging, 1310 and 1550nm wavelengths, and tunable EMLs. The inclusion of higher levels on integration, as with the MTX510EW 21-type, further bolsters Multiplex’s ability to meet the needs of its customers. “Multiplex’s 21-pin EML raises the bar as to the level of integration that is possible at the module level,” said Chris Peterson, Multiplex’s vice president of sales and marketing. “With an ideal footprint for use in transponders, and its wavelength-sensing capability, we truly feel that the MTX510EW 21-type is among the most technologically advanced 10-gig source lasers available on the market today.”Multiplex Inc.
