MobileAccess Cashes Up

MobileAccess Networks has just scored $11 million in its fifth round of venture funding, taking its total VC haul to $52 million in four years.

Probably best known for its mobile healthcare offerings, the company says it will spend the money on marketing, R&D, and expansion. In particular, the money will help the Vienna, Va., firm with its "brand backing" channel partners like GE Healthcare, according to MobileAccess's CEO, Cathy Zatloukal.

The firm's customer base is "fairly evenly split" among several major verticals, says Zatloukal, including the healthcare and public safety markets. This division is leading the company to develop a number of new applications for its platform, which allows users to deliver and manage cellular, WiFi, and other wireless communications over a single platform.

The new products will include wireless patient monitoring systems, in-building wireless TV streaming, and combined cellular/satellite communications for public safety apps. "Its pretty wide-ranging," says Zatloukal, adding that the latest rounding of funding should take the company to profitability.

The series E round was lead by Ziegler Meditech Equity Partners (ZMEP), a private equity firm investing in the medical device and healthcare IT markets, and joined by existing investors.
