Tech Giants Team Up on 3.5GHz Initiative

Iain Morris

Technology giants including Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC), Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) and Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) have teamed up to explore ways of using a 150MHz swathe of unlicensed 3.5GHz spectrum that has recently become available.

The so-called CBRS (for Citizens Radio Broadband Service) Alliance also includes Ruckus Wireless Inc. and Federated Wireless and plans to develop LTE-based services that could work over the 3.5GHz band.

While traditional mobile operators typically work within licensed frequency bands, interest in unlicensed spectrum has been growing as companies scout for low-cost ways of providing wireless connectivity.

For more on the formation of the CBRS Alliance, check out this story from Telecoms.com.
