Nokia is buying Australian radio specialist Mesaplexx for an undisclosed sum to help further shrink its basestations.

Mesaplexx specializes in advanced radio frequency (RF) filters, a technology used in every basestation. RF filters help reduce transmit and receive noise at the basestation, ensuring that spectrum can be shared within the same area and that the same antenna can serve to send and receive signals.

"Those familiar with radio technologies know that while there has been a lot of progress in recent years, filters are one area where new innovations can still yield significant improvements in performance," said Marc Rouanne, executive vice president of Mobile Broadband at Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), in a statement.

Specifically, Nokia says that it will apply the filter technology to its Flexi range of basestations. The Mesaplexx technology can potentially reduce the small cells form factor by 30% or more, Nokia claims.
