SK Telekom Preps Femto Service

3:00 PM -- SK Telecom (Nasdaq: SKM), South Korea's largest mobile operator by subscribers, is the latest carrier to have plans for an imminent femtocell service launch. But SK Telecom's femto service will be different because it will be only for 3G data coverage, and not voice. The service is called, appropriately, "Data Femto." (See picoChip, Contela Power SK Femtos.)

South Korean equipment vendor Contela will supply the femto access points, which are powered by chipsets from Picochip , as well as the management system and network gateways.

Perhaps a data-only femtocell service will be a welcome differentiator for SK Telecom. The operator doesn’t have the iPhone (that's sold exclusively in the country by rival KT Corp. ), but it reportedly had more than half of the smartphone market in the country at the end of the third quarter.
