The theft of customer data in an attack that compromises users' privacy is more serious than a security breach that causes a network outage, according to Håkan Kvarnström, chief security officer at Telia Company , the Nordic carrier with operations in multiple markets throughout Europe and Eurasia.

"Of course, it's serious if the network goes down, but that's reversible -- we can do something about it," he told Light Reading during a recent interview. Once the network has been restored, there is no further damage to the customer he noted. "That's not as far-reaching as losing data."

Kvarnström also noted that increasing complexity -- of networks, IT, devices, and applications -- is the major threat to an operator's security.

Data loss impact
While an outage creates a "localised" damage and a service interruption that has an immediate impact that can be treated, data loss impact can be somewhat unknown as data can be used in future malicious actions.
