What's in Your Office-in-a-Bag?

In a few years, knowledge workers will be able to do everything they need with just their phones.

That day is not today.

When I work remotely, I carry an awful lot of gear around with me. This week I shared a photo and description of my office-in-a-bag. (See Staying Productive With My Office-in-a-Bag.)

At around the same time, a friend and fellow tech journalist, InformationWeek's Curt Franklin, shared a photo of his.

"You guys sure pack a lot of stuff in your go bags," said another friend in the industry, 451 Research analyst Christian Renaud, sharing this excellent photo of his own travel kit:

And here's the photo that got me started thinking about offices-in-bags, from Mike Masnick, editor of TechDirt:

Mike carries a notebook computer and Wyse portable display with him, along with an ergonomic keyboard. That's extreme.

This industry requires a lot of travel for a lot of us. We trot around the world to professional conferences, vendor visits, customer premises and to work at our far-flung central offices and data centers.

My office-in-a-bag Super, Mitch!

I am always curious to see what others carry in their office-in-a-bag. I agree that carrying a monitor, etc, around is bit too extreme. Well, maybe it's how he feels comfortable with while working away from his office. 

I am trying to be more minimalist in carrying tech equipment around. Depending on where I go, and how long I will be there I carry the following: MacBook Pro (I leave it on a desk if I go to a conference, or trade show, and sometimes I don't take it with me at all since my experiment with my iPad last year), iPad Air 2, iPhone 6 Plus, two UK adaptors, one international multi-adaptor which was a lovely present from Nokia, a bag with cables, a Logitech ultrathin keyboard cover, a notepad, Post-Its, a pen. 

Thanks to the iPhone 6 Plus, I don't need anymore a camera, or recorder. I take all the photos, record interviews and stuff, and shoot video with my iPhone. I find working with the iPad Air 2 and the iPhone 6 Plus is great. The multitasking features Apple is adding to the iPad Air 3 will make working with it even better.

Next, I plan to get a New MacBook to add to my bag, and to reduce weight as well. I am finding my Mac a bit too heavy now.

Re: My office-in-a-bag Thanks, Mitch. I forgot to mention I also carry a microfiber cloth and Nordic Hug (it cleans, desinfects, and polishes touchscreens), earphones, and earplugs, of course, for when I need to work in silence in the press rooms, or planes, or any other noisy environment.

Sometimes music is alright; sometimes silence is the best. 3M earplugs are the best I have found. Maybe I should carry an extension cord, but that wouldn't following the minimalist concept. :/ The fact is that I needed one at IFSEC London's press room.

Re: My office-in-a-bag (Brief Thoughts) As always @Susan & @Mitch are ever so perceptive and to the point with their thoughts.  I have also worked to be very "minimalist" in what I try to do with my "office in a bag".   It starts w/the Phone (which I am increasingly finding to be quite capable), my Tablet, My Netbook powered by my "Keepod" device..and then if am really in need for a more "robust platform, my ASUS laptop while I tag along my hotspot just as a back-up--and yes I will also have my notepad and pen.    It will be ever so centralized--but although not "today"--we're almost there though folks--aren't we?

Re: My office-in-a-bag (Brief Thoughts) Thanks, Mike. I find it intersting that we all carry notepads and pens despite all the technology we also carry for writing purposes. Is it because sometimes it's easier and faster to open a notebook and scribe something in the old-fashioned way? Sometimes I like doing little drawings when I am thinking. You are accomplishing quite well the minimalist office-in-a-bag. Well, comparing to Mitch's, that is. :D I also forgot to mention my Huawei Mobile WiFi little modem that I use for interchanging local SIM cards and connect all my devices to it. Sometimes it doesn't work when the local service providers allow their SIM cards to work only with devices they sell. I hate that. Vodafone in the UK does that. -Susan

Re: My office-in-a-bag (Brief Thoughts) I've found over time that there seems to be more stuff carried than I use with any regularity. But, of course, I always think "but whet if I need that gizmo?." But, the essential is a pen and paper. It's certainly more convenient to not only write a quick note but to retrieve the notes from my pocket in a second.

Hotel shops don't carry these gadgets and when they do, these are not at part and expensive. Solution is that hotels should a carry an inventory for their guests just like they do with irons, hangers, extension cords etc.

life saver I've found a life saver and since then I've never traveled without it. It's a demultiplexer cable that has USB port on one end and eight different kinds of charging options on the other. I use the same cable to charge my iPad and Android phone, but not at the same time. Costed less than USD 3.0 I recall.
