300K iPads Sold on Launch Day

10:25 AM -- Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) announced today that it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the US on Saturday, the device's release date.

This figure includes deliveries of pre-ordered iPads, deliveries to channel partners, and sales at Apple retail stores, according to the company's press release.

Though 300,000 is obviously much less than the 700,000 one overly excited analyst, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, had estimated, it's not all that bad, considering that 270,000 iPhones were sold on that device's release date in 2007.

Plus, Apple's press release also stated that on Saturday eager new iPad owners downloaded more than 1 million apps from Apple's App Store and more than 250,000 e-books from its iBookstore.

"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world -- it's going to be a game changer," said CEO Steve Jobs in the press release. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."
