Alcatel Ships WiMax
Alcatel is supporting a number of WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 trials worldwide, and announcements regarding commercial deployments are expected before the end of 2006. Market demand is strong and Alcatel is supporting trials with 10 customers on all continents– including those announced previously with BellSouth in North America and Acca of Japan.
WIMAX 802.16e-2005 is becoming the dominant WiMAX standard as evidenced by the growing interest of the telecom community. Alcatel made an early commitment to the 802.16e-2005 standard and has been working closely over the past year with leading ecosystem trendsetters to define reference usage profiles and conduct interoperability testing.
Alcatel's Universal WiMAX infrastructure, based on the 802.16e-2005 standard, is a truly universal broadband wireless access solution -- natively supporting fixed, nomadic and mobile usage. It offers clear cost, coverage, flexibility and performance advantages for both mobile and fixed deployment scenarios.
"Alcatel remains committed to maintaining its leadership in Universal WiMAX, having made early R&D investments in the technology in 2004 that has been augmented, nearly tripling the number of dedicated engineers during the last three quarters of 2006," said Marc Rouanne, President of Alcatel's mobile activities."By mastering the whole range of wireless technology -- CDMA EVDO, UMTS, GSM/EDGE and WiMAX-- Alcatel will have a unique ability to assist its customers in their evolution to 4G. Together with Alcatel's unrivalled leadership in DSL, Alcatel is set to lead the development and roll-out of seamless broadband."
