Huawei, MegaFon Team on 5G
SHANGHAI -- Following the recent announcement of the world’s first 5G testbed project with the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Center, Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, indicated early innovation introduction dates in a 5G memorandum of understanding with MegaFon, a leading mobile telecom service provider in Russia and Russia’s champion in mobile data transfer.
According to the MOU, Huawei and MegaFon will collaborate to build trial 5G networks in the run up to the FIFA World Cup 2018 that will be hosted in 11 largest Russian cities and, according to Russia 2018 Bid Committee, will be attended by more than 1 million foreign football fans.
MegaFon will for the first time among the Russian mobile operator be involved in developing a communications standard and influence its technical characteristics based on the realities of the Russian telecommunications market, its frequency range and terrain. Huawei will take into account MegaFon’s recommendations and test pilot equipment for the new standard on the operator’s networks.
The 5G trials will be the first in Russia, as well as the first with plans to serve large scale users and M2M devices. To ensure testing of a full-scale 100% 5G experience, Huawei will be introducing the latest mobile technologies such as SCMA, full duplex, and cloud base station to the 5G network, as well as providing testing 5G terminals in trial zones.
The foundation of this cooperation is not just the solid partnership between Huawei and MegaFon. It is Huawei’s remarkable achievement in 5G innovation and MegaFon’s leadership in the Russian market with 69.1 million mobile subscribers and unswervingly pursuit of best quality of service that has brought these two companies together for this great collaborative project. In the past years, Huawei has successfully demonstrated its future base station with a record-breaking 115 Gbps of capacity. More excitingly, Huawei and 5GIC’s recent announcement of the world’s first 5G testbed has guaranteed the credibility of the 5G solutions Huawei will contribute in the coming years.
