Russian Into LTE TDD
10:15 AM -- BARCELONA -- Mobile World Congress 2012 -- Having initially been part of a shared networks plan, Russian operator Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS) (NYSE: MBT) is now striking out on its own with its Long Term Evolution (LTE) strategy.
The operator had signed up originally to use the LTE infrastructure that's being built out by Yota , but has now decided to build its own network capabilities for both the TDD and FDD flavors of LTE, the operator's VP of Strategy and Corporate Development Dr. Michael Hecker told Light Reading here this week.
The operator was recently awarded a license for Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) services in Moscow and the surrounding region and is committed to launching services before the end of 2013. And now it's waiting to get its hands on an FDD LTE license too.
Dr. Hecker provides more details of the company's LTE plans and talks about the timeframe for further LTE spectrum awards from about the 2:50 mark in the interview below:
