Rumor: AT&T Vets Wireless 'Domain' Suppliers
A source tells us that right now, in Atlanta, there is a reverse auction going on at AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T)'s offices where the company is working to decide what vendor will become its "domain" supplier for wireless infrastructure. (See AT&T Unveils Domain Supplier Strategy and AT&T's LTE Suppliers.)
Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC), Nokia Networks , Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. are said to be in the Atlanta offices (probably in separate rooms, handcuffed to metal tables, as we often see on TV cop shows).
The driver behind this auction is the continued buildout of AT&T's 3G network for now, and the coming deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) equipment down the road. AT&T is expecting to start testing LTE this year and plans to begin commercial launches of the faster wireless technology in 2011.
