SYDNEY -- Australians can look forward to more national 4G competition, as Optus boosts its 4G network across capital cities, regional and holiday centres from today, following the official release of new 700MHz spectrum by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Optus has kicked off 2015 with an aggressive 4G expansion program with more than 270 mobile sites across capital cities and regional centres due to go live with 4G 700 MHz today.

David Epstein, Vice President, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, Optus said: “During January, Optus plans to switch on 4G 700 MHz on more than 1500 sites in metropolitan and regional locations.

“While Optus already offers 4G in many state capitals and major regional cities, we are improving our 4G network today with 700MHz in parts of the Sydney CBD, Chatswood and Eastern Suburbs; Brisbane CBD, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts; Adelaide CBD, Melbourne CBD, Geelong, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula; plus Hobart CBD, Perth CBD, Claremont and Cottlesloe.

“Whether you are in Armidale or Sydney in New South Wales, Townsville or Brisbane in Queensland, Ceduna or Adelaide in South Australia, or Wangaratta or Melbourne in Victoria, with the right device Optus 4G will have you covered as our network expands,” said Mr Epstein.

A key benefit of 4G 700MHz is that it provides improved indoor coverage, which means more 4G whether at home or in the office.

Customers with compatible 4G devices will experience faster uploads and downloads of their favourite music, movies and videos and when gaming on their mobile devices.

For customers currently without a compatible 4G device, the roll-out of Optus 4G is likely to deliver a better 3G experience by improving network capacity in areas where customers are transitioning to the new 4G data network.

Optus customers with compatible 4G 700MHz devices such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3 and HTC One (M8) will be able to access Optus’ expanding 4G network. Look out for devices with the ‘4G in more places’ symbol.

The 4G expansion will broaden the reach of Optus’ existing 4G network, with plans to cover 90% of the Australian population by April 2015.
