MWC 2010: MTS Trials LTE With AlcaLu

7:25 AM -- BARCELONA -- Mobile World Congress -- East European mobile operator Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS) (NYSE: MBT) is the latest carrier to announce a trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE), with plans to put Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU)'s technology to the test in the Ukraine starting in the second half of 2010.

AlcaLu is providing the radio access network (RAN), evolved packet core (EPC), IP routers, supporting operations software -- part of what we call Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) -- and professional services. (See The SPIT Manifesto.)

Light Reading TV has just interviewed MTS's vice president for strategy and corporate development, Dr Michael Hecker, who talked about the carrier's LTE aspirations.
