Korea's LTE Lift-Off
11:25 AM -- South Korea, one of the most advanced telecom services markets in the world, has entered the next-generation mobile world with a bang, with two of the country's three mobile rivals launching their Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) services on July 1. (See LG U+ Launches Samsung LTE and SK Telecom Deploys Samsung LTE Network .)
The move is notable for a number of reasons. First, while SK Telecom (Nasdaq: SKM) and LG Telecom , which offers its mobile services under the U+ brand, have launched early, KT Corp. has decided to hold back a while. You can find out more about that decision by checking out the new Pyramid Research analyst note on South Korea's LTE market and the prospect for LTE uptake in the broader Asia/Pacific region.
Second, both LG U+ and SK Telecom are deploying technologies of note. LG U+ is using enhanced High-Rate Packet Data (eHRPD) to support service interoperability between LTE and CDMA, while SK Telecom is using Circuit Switched (CS) fallback techniques to offer voice over LTE.
