Hello, Components – We're Back!

We all know that the communications networking and services market is going through a massive transition, as transport networks migrate to 100G and beyond, 4G provides high-speed connectivity to mobile devices that make some fixed broadband connections look like a piece of damp string, and software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) turn traditional concepts inside out and upside down. Sort of.

So much change, yet some things remain the same. The weather sucks, most sports teams continue to drive their fans crazy with frustration (OK, so maybe not the Seahawks), and components developers and manufacturers are still the lifeblood of the networking industry and find their importance further enhanced when dramatic underlying infrastructure changes are in motion.

And that's why Light Reading has introduced a new content track especially devoted to the components market, so we can more closely track -- on behalf of you, the Light Reading community -- the key developments taking place in optical, access, wireless, and software. (Note, too, that we are not introducing special sports or meteorological content tracks...).

Coverage of the optical components sector was critically important to the birth of Light Reading in 2000, and after a drift away from keeping on top of developments there we're jumping back in, starting today with an overview of where the optical sector is right now and what some of the key components firms expect to see in 2014. (See The Optical Market: A Health Check .)

And there's more to come, of course. We have a new contributing editor, Carolyn Mathas, who will be getting to grips with developments across the components sector. (If you need to reach out to Carolyn with a tip or a story idea, she can be reached at [email protected]).

In addition, we have an industry event later this year: Next-Generation Network Components -– Wired, Wireless, and Virtual, will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara, Calif. And we have a fresh set of components-related webinars scheduled for 2014. (Please see our webinar calendar for more details.)

Mathas will be at the upcoming OFC 2014 event in San Francisco, as will I and Light Reading's new West Coast Bureau Chief, Mitch Wagner, so be sure to say hello if you're there. (See Light Reading's Back in California.)

And before that, I'll be at Mobile World Congress 2014, along with tens of thousands of other attendees and tens of thousands of taxi drivers. (See MWC: 10 Things That Could Melt Your Mind .)

Why is that relevant? Not much optical components action going on there, I hear you mutter.

And maybe so, but our components coverage isn't just about transceivers and coherent plug-ins (a phrase that makes my eyes water, just a little bit).

Because it also covers wireless/mobile modules (think antennas, amplifiers) and communications chipsets, along with the ATCA and server platforms that operators need in their thousands to support their applications. And as SDN finds its way into networks, the market for software components will also take a new turn.

So, we have a core components track that pulls our latest coverage together, but we also have four components content sub-categories that we expect to provide plenty of coverage opportunities:

Re: Optical components Yep, timely move. The components level tells a lot about transport. There's high-speed rollout yet to come in emerging markets and pressure for consolidation among vendors, so lots to report on.

There is lots going on including 100/400G, low power processors for servers and telecom (ARM and others) , LTE Advanced, SDN/NFV, DPI for policy and analytics. We have covered, or will be covering, all these topics in our Heavy Reading and Heavy Reading Components Insider reports (see http://www.heavyreading.com/commchip/).

Optical components I think the optical components sector was not getting much love from anyone for a while, but the 100G activity and the China market appear to be changing that--a good time to jump back in and follow Finisar, NeoPhotonics, Nistica and others.

Welcome back from those of us who never left It's good to see LR jump back into the components sector. Heavy Reading has been covering this market from Day Almost One, and we're glad to soldier on with LR's resources behind us again.
