German Spectrum Auction Update

8:00 AM -- Today marks the start of the third week and eleventh day of bidding in Germany's big spectrum auction. As of Friday, the bids totaled €1.5 billion (US$2 billion). (See German Spectrum Auction: Day 7, German Spectrum Auction Update, and German Spectrum Auction: Day 3.)

As expected, bidding is heaviest for blocks of spectrum in the 800MHz frequency band, which is an attractive option for Long Term Evolution (LTE). Germany's four mobile operators are competing in the auction -- E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH , Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT), Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co. OHG , and Vodafone Germany .

After two weeks, this year's auction looks to be a far more sensible affair than the 3G auction back in 2000 when operators splashed out €50 billion ($66.6 billion) on 3G licenses in the country.

The spectrum auction results are updated daily here on the German regulator Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) 's Website.
