Euronews: Turkcell Boasts 900 Mbit/s 4G Test

Turkcell, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., Zain Group, Telefónica UK Ltd. (O2 UK), Vodafone Group plc and BT Group plc are just some of the names making headlines in the EMEA region this Thursday.

  • Turkcell is claiming to have conducted an LTE-Advanced speed trial in Istanbul that saw the downlink speed indicator reach "approximately" 900 Mbit/s using supporting technology from Huawei. The test "set a new record for Turkey, making Turkcell one of the few operators to have achieved such speeds. We wanted to share our work on LTE-Advanced," stated the operator. Mobile operators around the world are moving quickly toward LTE-Advanced even while 4G LTE is in its infancy. (See SK Telecom Adds 300K LTE-Advanced Subs and Turkcell Tests LTE-Advanced.)

  • Still with Huawei, the Chinese vendor is to help regional operator Zain build an IP-based transport network for its mobile operations in Kuwait. For more details, see this press release.

  • Telefónica UK, better known for its O2 brand, is to launch its 4G service on Aug. 29, providing Everything Everywhere Ltd. (EE) with its first LTE service competition. (See O2 Brings 4G Rivalry to the U.K.)

  • Vodafone is to merge its Northern & Central Europe and Southern Europe regions into one Europe region and will report its Turkish operating company within the Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific region from Oct. 1. Philipp Humm, currently Regional CEO Northern & Central Europe, will become Regional CEO for Europe. Paolo Bertoluzzo, currently Regional CEO, Southern Europe, will become Group Chief Commercial and Operations Officer.

  • TeliaSonera's Spanish subsidiary Yoigo has struck a series of agreements, including a network sharing agreement, with Telefónica SA's domestic mobile business Movistar. Yoigo will resell Telefónica's fixed line services while Movistar will gain access to Yoigo's 4G network. (See TeliaSonera Preps 4G Services in Spain.)

  • BT launched its Sports channels today. BT's TV chief has told the BBC that the move is an "important strategic move." Others might say it's a massive gamble. (See BT's Got Balls.)

re: Euronews: Turkcell Boasts 900 Mbit/s 4G Test So the test got to 900 Mbit/s on the mobile speedometer. Well done -- it's a standout number. Now, what can you get in a full train carriage that's moving? That's when the stats get really interesting.
