T-Mobile USA appears to be tuning up its LTE network in Manhattan ahead of expected official 4G launch in New York City at the end of the month.
Here are T-Mobile LTE signals I spotted on Friday evening in mid-town Manhattan using the RootMetrics and Open Signal test apps.
These two tests were done minutes apart but, as you can see, results varied widely. I did a few more tests that got zero upload speeds. This leads me to think that T-Mobile is still testing and tuning the new network in this part of Manhattan.
T-Mobile's LTE network is already up and running in much of Brooklyn and Queens. The network has also been spotted in Philadelphia, Pa., San Antonio, Texas and Seattle, Wash. (See Finding T-Mo: More Magenta 4G Signals Appear and T-Mobile's 4G LTE Pops Up in NYC.)
T-Mobile has officially said it will cover 100 million U.S. citizens by mid-year and 200 million by the end of 2013 with its LTE service. Staff at its New York stores have said the new network will arrive in the Big Apple this summer.
