3:20 PM -- Regret The Error, which "reports on corrections, retractions, clarifications and trends regarding accuracy and honesty in the media," has posted a lengthy list of its top media blunders of 2006. It's all good, but this one caught my eye for some reason:

  • From the Financial Times:

An item in the Observer column on March 14 reported that Ludwik Dorn, Poland’s minister of the interior, had said some former police officers used the services of prostitutes. A more correct translation was that they had a "wide social life”.

Hey, some subtle shades of meaning are untranslatable.

But the Typo of the Year winner is brilliant. From an October 25Reuters story, entitled "Secrets of the honey bee revealed in genome":

  • With its highly evolved social structure of tens of thousands of worker bees commanded by Queen Elizabeth...

Queen Elizabeth has 10 times the lifespan of workers and lays up to 2,000 eggs a day.

Hell's bells! The British class system seems to be more deeply rooted than I'd suspected.
