Tellabs SmartCore 9100 platform offers a high-performance LTE evolved packet core
February 3, 2011
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The age of the smart mobile Internet is just beginning. Over the next few years, analysts foresee huge growth in mobile data traffic. To close the gap between surging mobile data traffic, higher network costs and lower revenues per user, service providers need to transform their networks and business models with networks that are designed to be flatter, faster and more intelligent.
Tellabs' new LTE (Long Term Evolution) EPC (evolved packet core), based on the Tellabs SmartCore 9100 platform, advances the transformation to the smart mobile Internet.
As an LTE SGW (serving gateway) and PGW (PDN gateway), the Tellabs SmartCore 9100 platform offers high performance at a lower cost per bit, decreasing the total cost of ownership. With its integrated deep packet inspection, granular quality of service and traffic management architecture, it enables operators to monitor real-time traffic, enforce advanced policy and charging models, and generate revenue from new sources.
Because it interworks gracefully with multiple LTE radio/access networks, the platform enables mobile operators to provide a consistent quality of user experience and avoid getting locked into a particular radio/access vendor. The Tellabs SmartCore EPC solution can enable greenfield operators to build a next-generation network with high performance, a compact footprint for distributed network design and advanced content awareness to enforce advanced policy and charging models. Current Tellabs SmartCore 9100 customers benefit from an easy migration from current WiMax or 3GPP solutions to LTE on the same platform.
"Mobile Internet traffic patterns are changing drastically as smartphones and mobile applications proliferate," said Rehan Jalil, senior vice president of mobile Internet for Tellabs. "Customers need much more than a router with other functions bolted on; instead they need a purpose-built solution with content awareness integrated into the packet core, which enables customers to meet the challenging business and technical demands of the mobile Internet."
