ShanDong ZiBo Telecom, part of China Telecom, is to install 10-Gbit/s optical technology from Marconi

LONDON -- ShanDong ZiBo Telecom - part of China Telecom - in the municipality of Zibo, a major industrial centre in ShanDong province in eastern China, is to install 10 Gbit/s optical technology from Marconi to increase the capacity of its networks. The contract is Marconi's first in China at this capacity. ShanDong ZiBo Telecom awarded the contract after a highly competitive tender, choosing Marconi ahead of the other leading global players in the provision of core transmission systems. Marconi, the world's leading supplier of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transmission systems - the technology that lies at the heart of ShanDong ZiBo Telecom's network - will supply its switching equipment during the first few months of 2001.

Yan Wangang, Deputy Director of Shandong Zibo Telecommunication Bureau, said: "Marconi offers an advanced but also stable product that gives us the capacity we need to expand our telephony and data services. Morever, Marconi has tremendous experience in the international communications industry and we aim to continue this long-term relationship. With the higher-speed system we will continue to benefit from SDH's inherent advantages, including monitoring and management, reliability and self-healing capabilities."
