Narrowband crossconnect architecture for metro optical access networks

BURNABY, British Columbia -- PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS - news) today introduced a chip set designed tosubstantially increase fiber efficiency and decrease provisioning times inmetropolitan optical access networks.The CHESS-Narrowband(TM) (CHannelizer Engine for SONET/SDH Narrowband) chipset provides high density grooming and aggregation to better utilizebandwidth in next generation SONET/SDH edge networks. With theCHESS-Narrowband's flexible fiber channel management capabilities, systemdesigners are able to develop cost-effective, scalable platforms. The chipset is ideal for converged packet and voice infrastructure equipment such asMulti Service Provisioning Platforms and Voice Gateways. TheCHESS-Narrowband complements PMC-Sierra's CHESS(TM) and CHESS-II(TM) chipsets by grooming sub-STS-1 (narrowband) voice and data channels prior totransport to the core of the Metro network The CHESS-Narrowband chip set includes the PM8610 SBS(TM), PM8611SBSLITE(TM), PM8620 NSE-20G(TM) and PM8621 NSE-8G(TM) devices. TheCHESS-Narrowband chip set forms a narrowband switch fabric providingsimultaneous cross connection of DS-0, NxDS-0, T1, VT1.5, E1, VT2, DS-3, E3,and STS-1 channels within the same system. At 622 Mbit/s capacity, thePM8610 SBS and PM8611 SBSLITE (Scalable-Bandwidth-Interconnect BusSerializer) are the industry's highest capacity DS-1 cross-connects capableof grooming 336 DS-1 (1.544 Mbit/s) channels in a single chip. Both the SBSand SBSLITE devices provide STS-12 time slot interchange and SBI bus orTelecomBus serialization, and the SBS device provides a bridging capabilityfrom 4x19.44 to 77.46 MHz SBI bus or TelecomBus. At 20 Gigabit capacity, thePM8620 NSE-20G (Narrowband Switching Element) device is the industry'shighest capacity DS-0 cross-connect capable of grooming 258,048 DS-0 (64Kbit/s) channels. At 7.5 Gigabit capacity, the PM8621 NSE-8G device targetsequipment with lower capacity requirements (OC-48 ADMs) and is capable ofgrooming 96,768 DS-0 channels.PMC-Sierra Inc.
